Northern Italian
A hidden garden courtyard at the end of a Sacramento Street passageway — and one of the most quietly romantic tables in San Francisco.
Off Sacramento Street
A striped awning, two chalkboards, and a green gate — that's the whole of Sociale from the street. Walk through it and the city drops away: a lantern-strung corridor of potted plants opens onto the courtyard where the tables actually are. It's the sort of entrance you notice only once someone has told you it's there.
3665 Sacramento Street · Presidio Heights
The Restaurant
Sociale is the neighborhood's best-kept secret in plain sight. From Sacramento Street you'd walk right past it — the entrance is a narrow brick passageway between storefronts that opens onto a trellised courtyard strung with lights. It is, by common agreement, one of the loveliest places to eat outdoors in San Francisco.
The cooking is Northern Italian and unhurried. Executive Chef Tia Harrison writes a new menu every month around what's actually in season, and adds piatti del giorno — dishes of the day — most evenings, so the menu is rarely the same twice. Expect handmade pasta, whole roasted fish, and a short, deep list of Italian wine.
It's a small room with a big regular following. Locals come for weeknight dinners at the bar; the patio fills up for birthdays and anniversaries. Service is warm without being formal — the kind of place where the staff remembers you by the third visit.
The Menu
Sociale rewrites its menu monthly. The dishes below are representative of a recent seasonal menu — the shape stays the same even as the ingredients turn over.
A 5% surcharge is added to each check in support of San Francisco employer mandates. Menu and prices reflect a recent seasonal menu and change monthly — see sfsociale.com for tonight's carta.
Specials & Standing Offers
Dishes of the day, announced by the server and never printed. They're where the kitchen puts whatever came in that morning — always ask before you order.
The entire menu turns over monthly with the season. Regulars time a visit to the first week to catch it fresh.
The only two days lunch is served, noon to 2:30 — and the best chance to have the patio to yourself on a sunny afternoon.
Heat lamps and blankets keep the courtyard in service through the fog. Request patio seating when you book — it goes first.
The courtyard and dining room can be booked for private parties. Contact the restaurant directly to plan a buyout.
A pared-down takeout menu runs alongside dinner service — the pastas travel remarkably well.
Know Before You Go
There's no grand facade. Look for the passageway on the north side of Sacramento between Locust and Spruce and walk to the end of it — the courtyard opens up behind the street.
Patio tables are the reason to come and are requested far more often than they're available. Note the preference on your reservation and confirm when you arrive.
Sociale is dark on Sunday, and lunch runs Thursday and Friday only. Plan around it — this catches visitors out constantly.
3665 Sacramento also houses Boichik Bagels, which serves mornings until early afternoon. One address, two entirely different neighborhood rituals.
